March Housing Starts Remain Steady Amid Market Shifts

Canada's housing starts fell 6% in March to 235,852 units, with the six-month trend also declining. The slowdown was mainly due to a 7% drop in urban multi-unit starts, while single-detached starts fell 2%. Most provinces saw declines, notably Ontario and British Columbia, except Quebec, which rebounded. Housing starts have been trending lower since September 2025, affected by softer population growth, high inventories, and weaker pre-construction sales.
